Royal Palace Amsterdam The impressive Royal Palace Amsterdam, located on Dam Square, is one of Amsterdam's top attractions. The Palace is in active use by His Majesty the King. It plays a key role during State Visits, Award Ceremonies, New Year’s receptions and other royal events. Also the building is the impressive setting of the abdication and investiture of the Monarch. The Royal Palace is one of the most imposing buildings in the heart of Amsterdam and is for over 350 years one of the biggest sights in the city. In the Dutch Golden Age it was built as the Town Hall of Amsterdam. Both the architecture and the decoration proclaimed the city’s supremacy and prosperity in the seventeenth century. It’s paintings and sculptures were made by some of the most famous artists of the time like Rembrandt’s pupils Ferdinand Bol and Govert Flinck. Louis Napoleon, brother of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, became the King of Holland and converted the Town Hall into a Palace in 1808. The superb collection of Empire furniture, clocks and chandeliers date from that period. This empire collection is one of the most complete and best preserved in the world. From 1813 the building is in use by the Dutch Royal House. You are welcome to discover the unique history and fascinating interior of the building. Every visitor receives a free mobile guide, which will provide you with a comprehensive tour through the Royal Palace. For children there is a special guide and free entrance up to 18 years. Free mobile guide available in Dutch, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese and Russian.
